Case Study

Tier 5 acted as general contractor for this project, taking engineered plans from paper to reality. Creating a project timeline and assembling the right team to complete the project for this new 20ton packaged air conditioning unit. 

The Challenge


This was a retrofit project, adding new infrastructure to existing. Side air discharge from the new packaged AC was the only option to integrate it into the building. The new supply air ductwork needed to come down and enter the side of the building and the return air enters from the top of the building.


What We Did


Tier 5 managed every aspect of this project to ensure it was done correctly, accepting delivery of the unit, layout of equipment, roofing, duct supports and building penetrations. Working with the crane company on a lift plan and building custom curbs for the unit. The building walls were 16'' thick making the concrete cut especially difficult but with proper hoarding inside the building to protect infrastructure risks were mitigated. Cooling needed to be maintained in the space while over 50% of the existing ductwork was removed so all the duct sizes could be increased for the new air flow designs. Temp cooling and fans were set up to maintain desired temperatures throughout constructions. 

What We Achieved


Tier 5 fully integrated this new 20ton packaged AC systems to a customer telecommunications site. The new power feed for this unit required a full building power shut down, which we bought in generators to keep mechanical equipment running and the battery systems kept IT equipment running and all this had to be done within a specified time slot so batteries did not run dead. The new unit was connected to the DDC building automation system so the client can get real time data on its operation and alarms.
